Modeling: Escalator Design: Beba Shternberg, Michal Yerushalmy. Programming: Alexander Zilber Graphics: Tanya Tsytkin The Escalator is one of three in a set “Modeling”. Before using this software it is recommended to use first the two others: “Modeling: MoveOn”- introducing of graphs representing phenomena, realizing the need in graphs as mathematical objects. “Modeling: The Function Sketcher”- analyzing lines that are components of graphs by concerning their rate of change. Stairs as a model of change. The software allows setting the change of a graph - the derivative of the function (a constant change or a linear change or exponentional change) and to get the appropriate function. Changing parameters in the change will cause to appropriate changes in the function. The software supports not formal qualitative way to construct connection between the function and its derivative, and between the function and its integral. In addition the software helps in understanding the dynamic nature of the derivative as a speed of changing of the function. In this way the user links between a mathematical and physical model of phenomenon. The graphical and the numerical representations make effective the learning process.
