Addition and subtraction of linear functions
Hot and cold drinks

A cafe at a train station sells hot and cold drinks. The owners collected data and analyzed sales of hot and cold drinks throughout the year, and found that, approximately, every 5 degree rise in outside temperature leads to an increase in the sales of cold drinks of 30 cups per day and to a decrease in the sales of hot drinks of 15 cups per day.

Display the sum and difference functions of the two functions describing the sales of hot and cold drinks. What is the meaning of the sum and difference functions, and what can you learn from them?
  • How does temperature affect daily profits from sales of drinks, assuming that profit on hot and cold drinks is identical? What if the profit on a hot drink is higher than the profit on a cold drink, or vice versa?
