Functions defined on intervals
Overtime

Many employers pay employees who work beyond the regular hours a higher wage for the overtime. In the USA, for example, the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act requires every hour worked beyond 40 hours a week to be compensated by a 50% increase at least.

While negotiating a new labor agreement in a factory, the workers' union received two proposals for a new wage structure from management.

regular work hours
per week
hourly wage for regular
hours
hourly wage for
overtime
Prposal A 45 hours $4 $8
Proposal B 25 hours $3 $6

At the union meeting, a controversy arose about which was the better proposal. Some participants claimed that Proposal A was obviously better because the wage it offered was better both for regular hours and for overtime. Others pointed out the fact that according to Proposal B overtime started much earlier, which was an advantage.

Use the Functions on Intervals tool to present the dependence of the weekly wage on the number of hours worked according to each proposal.
  • Compare the two proposals and write recommendations for the workers' union.
  • The workers' union wants to make a counter-offer to management. Prepare a proposal that is better than management's yet it would not cost much more -- so that management would not reject it out of hand.
