Cab fares

The charge for a cab ride is determined by the length of travel. Some companies also charge a basic, fixed amount. Below are descriptions of fares of three competing cab companies:

Quick Cabs:
$0.25 per kilometer
+ $4 fixed charge
Fast Cabs:
$0.50 per kilometer
+ $1 fixed charge
Speedy Cabs:
$0.75 per kilometer
no fixed charge

Show the three cab fares in various representations (correspondence rule, value table, graph).

  • Which cab company would you choose if you needed to travel a distance of 2 kilometers? 8 kilometers? 16 kilometers?
  • Is there a ride that would cost the same with two of the cab compamies?
  • Suggest a new fare which would be cheaper than the other three for any length of travel.
