Choose books of different sizes. Make measurements of various quantities related to their page design and record your measurements
in the table below.
Analyze the data you have collected. (A
spreadsheet software might be useful.) Consider the following points:
What is the range of the various quantities?
-
Are some of the quantitites
relatively constant for different books?
-
Are some of the books unusual in their design? How is this reflected in the measurements?
-
Consider ways to represent certain data (for example in graphic form) in a way that exposes some salient phenomena.
Rank the books you have examined according to how "efficient" they are, that is, by the percentage of the page area that is used for text.
Do any of the books you examined have an esthetically pleasing
page design in your opinion? If so, can you describe which of the quantitites are responsible for it?
In the future, readers will be able to order any book in the design of their
choice, to be executed by a computer-aided press. Prepare a page design of your liking. Present an example and describe your reasons for choosing your design.
Suppose you want one of the books you have measured printed according to the page design you have prepared, using
the same size font as in the existing book. Estimate the number of pages in your edition of the book.
