Products of linear functions
Fencing two areas: an optimization problem

Owners of a farm want to fence in two areas, one for goats and one for sheep, in the following manner:

Providing maximum fenced-in area with a fixed length of fence
Raise conjectures: What ways of fencing can you conceive of as candidates for the plan that provides maximum area for the animals -- given a fixed length of fence?
  • Construct an appropriate function and investigate it in order to find the best fencing plan.
  • Is the best fencing plan among the conjectures you raised, or does the result surprise you?
  • Generalize the investigation to a case where 3 or more areas need to be fenced.
