FUNDS AND INSURANCE

Hanna Weingarten, who deals with these matters, informs:

The Swiss Fund of 1,25 billion $
On December 14, 1999, a meeting, initiated by the American judge Edward Corman was held at Binyanei Hauma in Jerusalem. It was chaired by judge (ret.) Moshe Bejsky, representatives of all Israeli organizations of Holocaust survivors participated. The aim was to exchange views on the Fund, if the proposed solution is acceptable and how the monies should be distributed. There were different viewpoints, some said that the decision cannot be put off anymore, because of the high age of the survivors, others, that the offered sum is insufficient. The compromise: to immediately distribute one half of the sum (the criteria were not yet decided) and at the same time to request of the Swiss to increase the sum. In addition the participants decided not to agree to the Swiss request, to sign a document waiving all further claims from Swiss financial institutions and insurance companies and also claims for the return of art objects. It is known, that Jewish property in Swiss hands is much more valuable than the offered sum.

Compensation for Forced Labor
An agreement for the sum of 5,5 billion $ was signed. This fund will be at the disposal of entitled persons in the second half of the year 2000. It is not yet clear how the money will be distributed..
